You know, the reason I will always be a Mercedes brand loyalist is because they will make any part for any car that has ever worn a Mercedes star, which means you can take a 60 year old car into the dealer and be well cared for.

Oh yeah? Will they make a part for my Daimler-Benz Patent Motorwagen?

I remember reading somewhere that they have parts for them in stock at their classics centre in SoCal. Although that was a few years ago, IIRC.

It’s funny, as someone who plans to own their German car for a long, long time I love this. As someone who works for a tear 1 it can be wildly frustrating and difficult. I’m in safety and there’s this material required for an energy absorption component in a seat belt assembly on a 20+ year old since production ended vehicle (so 30 years old since intro probably of the design itself) that is now 100% exhausted world wide. Without going into the details, we couldn’t get this material if we wanted to, but because it’s safety component that’s homologated and certified we can’t just use an alternative material. We also can’t certify another material, even if the OEM wanted to pay the hundreds of thousands in development and validation what are we going to homologate and certify? Something out of their museum? Then no OEM wants to rerun barriers for the risk something may happen on a car that is 20 years old and non representative of newly manufactured and originally certified. Right now we’re at a stale mate, we have said we cannot supply additional service parts (we are WELL beyond legal requirements), the OEM has said that’s unacceptable but it’s reality...
